Health Care System Response to Large Disasters A current issue today that impacts the societys citizens, health care and the profession of nursing is the health care systems response to large disasters. Earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes are large natural disasters that occur worldwide. Acts of terrorism are another form of disaster that our society has suffered from, however these are man-made disasters. Disasters affect families, children, schools, businesses, health care professionals, and also the health care system. In the instance that a disaster should occur, the health care system must be fully prepared; this includes having a clear and effective plan and collaborating with organizations in that area beforehand. A disaster prepared plan can allow the health care professionals to provide adequate care and support to the public. This particular issue is interesting because many people are not aware of the planning and the details that must be considered in disaster preparedness and response plans. All individuals particula rly in the health care profession, such as nurses, must be well-educated about this topic to better the health care system’s response to large disasters. As the holiday season is coming nearer each day, I found it appropriate to look further into the traditional Thanksgiving topic. I can only describe what my family does, my Puerto Rican and Caucasian family. As far as I can say, we are not necessarily traditional with our celebration of Thanksgiving. So I figured why not use this assignment as a way to further look into the holiday and how it is celebrated across America, this can mean anything from families celebrating it in their homes, to the retail shops of the country selling holiday/seasonal items to go along with the tradition. Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde Essay By: Susy E-mail: emailprotected The Dominion of Evil The term Jekyll and Hyde, now a part of our common language, can be found in most dictionaries. Random dictionary definitions of Jekyll and Hyde include: 1) One who has quasi-schizophrenic, alternating phases of pleasantness an unpleasantness. 2) A person having a split personality, one side of which is good and the other evil. 3) This phrase refers to a person who alternates between charming demeanor and extremely unpleasant behavior. This concept revolves around the experience of Dr. Jekyll, enabled by drinking a potion, into living as his own living side, whom he names Hyde. Stevenson intended Jekylls character to be pronounced Je (French word for I) Kill (Je-Kill = I kill), as an indication that the doctor wanted to isolate the evil portion of himself, appropriately named Hyde, meaning low and vulgar hide or flesh which must hide from civilization. When Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the story Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he portraye d mans evil nature as a portion of his total makeup, and showed that the evil portion will often express itself more forcefully and powerfully than do the other aspects. Throughout life, a person can develop a sense of the conflict that actually involves ones good and evil natures. Often a persons current actions reflect their childhood experiences. Jekyll, described by Stevenson, born wealthy, grew up handsome, honorable, and distinguished. Yet, throughout much of his life, he commits secret acts which he thoroughly regrets. Early in Jekylls development, Stevenson had him recognize a profound duplicity of lifeso profound a double dealer and that man is not truly one, but truly two. Intellectually, he evaluates the differences between his private life and his public life and, ultimately, he becomes obsessed with the idea that at least two different entities, maybe even more, occupy a person. Jekylls reflections and his scientific knowledge lead him to contemplate the possibility of scientifically isolating these two components. With this in mind, he begins to experiment with various chemical combinations. When Jekyll discovers the correct formula and drinks it, he is approaching a hardy fifty years of age; after his transformation into Edward Hyde, he feels younger, lighter, and more sensual, thereby indicating the appeal of the evil side. At that point, he acknowledges the thorough and primitive duality of man. He sees the necessity to try to separate the two selves, to hide that shameful part of himself from the world, and therefore stay in control of his evil nature. Dr. Jekylls dominant evil side, also apparent in every person, brings disgust from others around him. Dr. Jekylls evil side, Mr. Hyde, commits several appalling acts throughout the novel, including mere acts like trampling over a young girl, to gruesome acts like murdering a man. Acquiring no respect by anyone he comes in contact with, Mr. Hyde is looked down upon in distaste: There was somethi ng wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright detestable. I never saw a man I so disliked. Women around him, upon looking at Hyde, suddenly seem as wild as Harpies, and even the apothecary who is as emotional as a bagpipe turns sick upon seeing Hyde and has a strong desire to kill him. The reader becomes entranced with a person who can evoke such horrible responses in many different kinds of people. As with many instances of mans amoral tendancies versus his angelic tendancies, Jekyll and Hyde themselves have a strange relationship with each other. Jekyll hates Hyde for the ascendancy that Hyde has over him, and Hyde hates Jekyll both because of Jekylls hatred and, more importantly, because Hyde knows that Jekyll can destroy him (Hyde) by committing suicide, but, during the act of Jekylls dying, Hyde regains dominion so that Utterson and Poole find the body not of Jekyll, but that of Hyde. At this point in the novel, the reader becomes perplexed about thel iteral separation of the two components of one man, Dr. Jekyll. All people share this battle between good and evil within their own subconsciousness. The dominion of the winning side proves apparent to the onlooker, thus confirming that ones actions are encouraged by a single forceful portion that characterizes the entire person. The evil represented by Hyde only makes up a portion of the entire person Jekyll has become. Evil, good, and many other qualities will ultimately be discovered to encompass the entire person. Jekyll and his experiments prove that our existence has two partsone good and one evil. This story proves a timeless representation of the struggle felt within every individual between ones good side versus ones bad side. Any person can reflect upon this story to be reminded of the role an evil side can play, and therefore, prevent it from dominating ones inner self. If we allow the evil to overcome the power of control, that will in the end, destroy each of us. Racism: Ku Klux Klan, Neo Nazis, Aryan Nations Ku Klux Klan. Neo Nazis. The Aryan Nations. The American Nazi Party. What are these groups? Why are they present in a land of supposed equality of all men? They are there because there are millions of Americans that believe in their message of white pride. The African American population is growing and Americans are now a mixed group of people. Black people are white people's neighbours, doctors, friends. With a growing unity between the two races, why does racism continue? The answer is simple. Racists from many years ago raise their kids in clans and white supremacy groups and teach them the ways of hatred. These kids grow up brain-washed that black people are their enemies and, taught by example, will continue this trend (The Volume Library; 1988). The Ku Klux Klan has been around since the end of the civil war. It is a roller coaster of a history. From extreme power, to rapid decline, and slow reemergence (Software Toolworks Encyclopedia; 1992). The clan, who is notorious for its violence, has a relatively innocent beginning. It was formed from some veterans from the confederate army and was first called the Kuklos Clan which, in Greek, meant Circle Clan. One person thought it would be a good idea to call it the Ku Klux Klan as a parody of the fraternity names which always had three Greek alphabet letters in it. They created the Clan to be mischievous and to do it without anyone knowing who they were which accounts for their costumes and masks. They, like most whites, were upset that the black people were free because black people were a constant reminder of the bitter defeat of the South. So to have fun they terrorized black people. Eventually the group grew, fluctuating, but grew to become the first white supremacy group in America and with that growth, their hatred grew as well into what was seen in the early and middle 1900's and what is seen today. Along with the KKK, other anti-black, pro-white groups formed and stemmed out all over the U.S.A. The Neo Nazis who are more commonly know by the term Skin Heads, are a growing force in hate groups. There hatred of Hispanics, Jews, Blacks, and others are now the fastest growing force in America. The Skin Head movement is usually done by the younger kids. These kids are drawn to the Aryan Nations and Neo Nazis by the promise of free drugs, free booze, heavy metal music, ultimate freedom and rebellion. A lot of these kids stay because of family troubles at home and, like in a gang, feel like they have a family with the group and feel loved. The skinheads are a family... A lot of us don't have what you'd call a home commented Joshua, who is a 16 year old recruiter in California (United They Hate; Michael Kronenwetter). The race war was in full force by the 1960's. With the growth of white supremacy and their groups, black too had a weapon. Martin Luther King Jr. lead his people to march in Washington to end segregation and to form black unity for an equal and better America. Malcolm X, who was a Muslim, may have come from a different religion than his Christian counterpart, but had a very similar message and a similar fate. Both were assassinated. Today the hate groups of America have spread into Canada and are particularly common in Manitoba. The major sects are of the same name as their American cousins with a very similar message. Racism, despite much opposition, will never end. As long as there is fighting among a Jew and a Palestinian or hatred between a white and a black, Racism will be there. Only a utopian society can achieve such a dream. It is in human nature to have a few people that do not understand or possibly hate those who are different but, in fact, we are not different, we are judgmental and we are discriminatory, we segregate.
